Alternative Divorce Options for You & Your Spouse

If you are concerned about the massive amounts of time, effort, and money you will have to put into getting a divorce, you may be glad to hear that you have other options. Another way to bring a marriage to an end is through divorce mediation, a process in which an unbiased third-party helps you and your spouse resolve issues from the division of property to child custody.

At Percy Law Group, PC, we have almost three decades of experience helping individuals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island with a wide variety of family law issues. Our Boston divorce mediation attorneys can guide you and your spouse through the entire mediation process in a manner that is fair to you both. We also have our very own Divorce Mediation Center where you can receive comprehensive mediation services.

How Does Divorce Mediation Work?

Mediation involves the parties who are getting a divorce regularly meeting with the mediator to resolve issues related to the separation through negotiation. The mediator is trained and skilled in a variety of relevant fields and techniques, such as divorce law, negotiation facilitation, and conflict resolution. The goal is to avoid litigation by having both parties come to a mutual agreement on their own, without the interference of courts or a judge.

Mediation can help settle the same issues divorce court can such as:

  • Property division
  • Child custody and visitation
  • Child support
  • Alimony and spousal support

Mediation is certainly more difficult when children are involved, but far from impossible. We will help you come up with a solution that works best for both parents and, more importantly, your children.

Will Mediation Work for Me?

Mediation is a great option for couples who remain on good terms or are at least willing to work together on finding solutions. Mediation doesn’t require you and your spouse to be great communicators or have no reservations about working together—all it takes is for you both to have an open mind. The mediator will take care of the rest.

However, mediation may not work for you in certain circumstances. If things are very rocky between you and your spouse or you are having trouble getting them to agree to medication or even a conversation, divorce court may be a more foolproof option. Traditional divorce may also make you feel more comfortable if you are getting out of an abusive relationship. The imbalance of power and other negative feelings may be a lot to bear during the close confines of mediation proceedings.

We want you to feel heard and safe, so if you aren’t sure whether or not mediation is right for you, give us a call. We will discuss your situation extensively during a free consultation so that you can decide if mediation will work for you and your spouse. Our divorce mediation lawyers are accessible and willing to travel to you if needed.
